WAUKEE - An overtime winner from West Des Moines Valley’s Jordy Triana was the difference against a strong Waukee side on Tuesday night. It was Waukee’s first loss in five games, while top-ranked Valley picks up its 11th win of the season, maintaining their unbeaten record. Both teams played very distinct, contrasting styles with Valley playing a direct, counterattacking brand of soccer while Waukee focused very much on possession, building from the back and successfully playing one and two-touch soccer to get out of pressure. This made for an interesting tactical match up. After a slow start to the game without many chances, Valley capitalized on a Waukee giveaway deep in midfield. The Tigers pounced; picking up the ball and after a quick passing exchange, Jordy Triana tucked away the opener with just less than 10 minutes left in the first half. Halftime talks for both teams would have likely urged their teams on, but it took a second goal with 20 minutes left from Valley sophomore, Ronald Anthony on an assist from senior Connor Russo to wake up the Warriors. The Waukee Hooligans supporter’s section was in full voice for the majority of the game and finally, the team decided to match their intensity. Junior Trevor Jones halved the deficit with a goal off a throw in with 13 minutes remaining. Less than one minute later, Waukee’s high-press was too much and junior Zach Eaton leveled the score at 2 apiece. Chants of Valley? Who?! were bellowed from the supporter’s seating. But it would be Valley with the final say in overtime after Triana stabbed home the rebound from a free kick just 6 minutes into the extra period. Valley coach Aziz Haffar is known for coaching teams that “find a way to win” and it seems as though this team has that quality. The Tigers will have an opportunity to test themselves again on Thursday, April 26 when they visit third-ranked and also undefeated Ankeny Centennial. The Warriors will look to bounce back as they travel to a tough away match this Friday, April 27 against the Ames High Little Cyclones.
